SINGAPORE UAS COMMUNITY

The Singapore Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Community was conceived with the support of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and Enterprise Singapore (ESG), to represent and serve the interests of the emerging UAS industry.

Building upon our strengths as an Association, we will engender the UAS Community, and together, play a role in supporting market development and access, sourcing of new technologies, development of standards and policy advocacy.

AAIS Year-End Networking Evening

The AAIS Year-End Networking Evening held on 4 December at Amara Singapore brought together members, partners, and guests to mark 2024 and look ahead to 2025. Highlights included speeches by 1st VP Pang Yong Kiang, a year-in-review by CE Sia Kheng Yok, a fun Icebreaker Quiz, and a lively toast led by 2nd VP Raymond Lim. The event wrapped up with a Lucky Draw and festive networking. AAIS thanks all who attended for making this year-end event a success.

Singapore UAS Community @ Expand Space

The Singapore UAS Community by AAIS participated in the inaugural Expand Space event, showcasing UAS technologies with the support of Skyports, ST Engineering, and Heron AirBridge. Held on 22 November and organised by Space Faculty, Expand Space featured interactive zones and a Future Careers Showcase highlighting Deep Tech fields including AI, robotics, and space, drawing over 700 participants.

  • AAIS 22nd Annual General Meeting - The 22nd AAIS Annual General Meeting (AGM) was successfully held on 25 October 2024, with a strong turnout from AAIS members. One of the key highlights was the election of two Vice Presidents to the Management Committee. We are pleased to welcome Mr Pang Yong Kiang of Pratt & Whitney as 1st Vice President and Mr Raymond Lim of Airbus as 2nd Vice President. Members were also treated to an exclusive briefing by the Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn).
  • Dialogue with Selangor State EXCO and trade delegation - AAIS facilitated a dialogue with its members on 1 August 2024 featuring the Honorable Dr Mohamad Fahmi Ngah, Selangor State EXCO. The event provided a platform for AAIS members and the Sg UAS Community to find out about the developments in Selangor's aerospace, UAS, and AAM ecosystem, and network with officials from the Selangor state government.
  • AAIS Launches Singapore UAS Directory 2024/25 - AAIS has launched the fourth edition of the Singapore UAS Directory, with the support of the CAAS, Enterprise Singapore and MPA. Since the last edition, the breadth and sophistication of the industry has evolved. To better reflect this, we have doubled the number of classifications and grown from 56 pages to 88 pages. We trust that this new edition will provide better utility to end users.
  • New Unmanned Aircraft Flying Area at Dover - CAAS has established the second Unmanned Aircraft Flying Area (UAFA) for the public at a 0.6 ha site off Dover Road, offering a flying area over land and greenery. The UAFA was opened by Minister for Transport Mr Chee Hong Tat on 6 July 2024. The establishment of UAFAs was a key recommendation of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Advisory Panel set up by CAAS in 2019, which AAIS was delighted to participate in.
2022
  • Visit by European Parliament Transport Committee - It was a pleasure to host a delegation of the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Tourism on 2 November 2022 at Seletar Aerospace Park. The delegation was visiting Singapore to explore innovative solutions in the transport sector. Led by Committee Chair MEP Jens Gieseke, the delegation visited AAIS and Skyports, where they were briefed on the aviation recovery, and drone services in Singapore.
  • EU-Asia Symposium on UAS/UAM - Members of the Singapore UAS Community participated in the EU-Asia Symposium on UAS/UAM held at the Goodwood Park Hotel on 18-21 Oct 2022 by invitation of CAAS and EASA. The occasion was also marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CAAS and EASA to collaborate on urban air mobility to support the development, deployment and safe operation of VTOL aircraft. 
  • Singapore UAS Community Networking - The Singapore UAS Community was excited to hold its first in-person networking event on 4 October 2022 at Brewerkz, Orchard Rendezvous Hotel. Organised in partnership with Montgomery Asia and Drones Asia 2023, the event attracted more than 40 participants. Following great conversations and bonding with new friends over beer and bites, we capped the evening with a lucky draw graced by Mr Rupert Owen, co-founder of GeoConnect Asia and Drones Asia.
  • Urban Air Mobility Roundtable - AAIS, ITE and Volocopter were proud to jointly organise the first Urban Air Mobility Roundtable in Singapore on 13 July 2022. Held at ITE College Central, the session brought together UAM professionals and government representatives to discuss the development of the UAM ecosystem and business opportunities in the region. The in-person event was oversubscribed, with aerospace professionals from various sectors. Guests also had the chance to visit the VoloCity Exhibition.
  • UAS Community at Geo Connect Asia 2022 - The Singapore UAS Community by AAIS was active at the second edition of Geo Connect Asia held from 1 to 2 June 2022. This in-person event with livestream was held at Sands Expo & Convention Centre with the aim of driving the adoption of geospatial technology from niche applications and into the mainstream. Members of the Community participated in both the exhibition and conference.
2020
  • TR 78 : 2020 – Building Facade Inspection Using UAS - The Building Façade Inspection using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Working Group has developed a new Technical Reference (TR) entitled "TR 78: 2020 - Building facade inspection using UAS". The TR provides a set of non-exhaustive specifications for the use of UAS to conduct inspections of existing building facades. Learn about the development of TR 78: 2020 and its applications from UAS experts in this virtual workshop.

  • Urban Planning and Infrastructure for Advanced Air Mobility - In the second of a series of 3 webinars organised by AAIS, experts discuss infrastructural considerations for AAM implementation and discuss approaches to enable AAM in urban areas. Moderated by Mr Ilya Khanykov of McFly.aero, the session included speakers from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, Independent Business Group, and Energy Research Institute @ NTU.

  • AAM Webinar 1: Singapore and Advanced Air Mobility - In the first of a series of 3 webinars organised by AAIS, experts, regulators and academia share exciting developments for AAM implementation and discuss approaches to enable AAM in Singapore. Moderated by AAIS' Robin Thevathasan, the session included speakers from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Singapore Economic Development Board, Volocopter and the eVTOL Research and Innovation Centre.

  • First Virtual Networking Session for Members - AAIS organised our first Virtual Networking session on 17 September 2020! Held in place of our traditional quarterly HOST Networking sessions, this web-based event provided the opportunity for members of the aerospace and UAS communities to meet and reconnect while in the comforts and safety of their own spaces. The event kicked off with a brief keynote on "The Agile Approach in COVID-19 times". Participants then joined break out rooms to network and share their thoughts on the Agile mindset and what it would mean for their organisations.
  • Briefing & Focus Group Discussion on Indoor Testbed & UAS Initiatives - The Singapore Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Community came together for a briefing and focus group discussion on indoor test-bedding and UAS Lab initiatives on 22 January 2020. Organised by AAIS, the event attracted UAS manufacturers and solution providers, end-users including aerospace and non-aviation companies, educational and research institutions, as well as government agencies. 2023
  • AAIS 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner - AAIS culminated its 20th Anniversary with a Gala Dinner graced by Minister of State Alvin Tan, with the presence of industry captains, valued members and partners. Festivities featured the launch of Propel, and the introduction of the Promising Entrepreneurs Programme. AAIS also honoured long-standing members at the event which encapsulated heritage, progress, and camaraderie of the industry.
  • 2nd EU-Asia UAS/UAM Symposium - The 2nd EU-Asia UAS/UAM Symposium co-organised by EASA and CAAS was held from 7-11 Nov 2024 in Singapore. AAIS and local industry players were once again invited to present and participate in the sessions on 9 and 10 Oct 2023. Chaired by CAAS Senior Director and CTO Mr Tan Kah Han, the 2 days were an excellent time of exchange, learning and networking. Amongst other things, industry benefited from the summary of the discussions between regulators.
  • AAIS 21st Annual General Meeting - The 21st Annual General Meeting of AAIS took place on 20 October at the WingsOverAsia Lounge. Members participated in an election for the new 14th Management Committee which will be serving a two-year term (until AGM in 2025). Members also endorsed the Annual Report and the Financial Report, as well as the the reappointment of the Honorary Legal Advisor and Honorary External Auditor for the Association.
  • Frequentis celebrates Asian Competence Centre opening with AAIS - AAIS was honoured to participate in Frequentis' Asian Competence Centre (ACC) opening on 13 Oct 2023. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was presided over by Dr Harald Mahrer, President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO), Frequentis CEO Norbert Haslacher and Chief Executive AAIS. We look forward to the ACC's positive impact to the air transport ecosystem.
  • Roundtable with Chair of UK CAA - A Roundtable with Chair of UK CAA, Sir Stephen Hillier, was held on 28 Sep 2023 and ably moderated by Derek Cheng, Head of Commercial APAC at Vertical Aerospace. The session took place on the sidelines of the Global Urban and Advanced Air Summit 2023 in Singapore and was hosted at Bombardier Aerospace Services. A rich discussion ensued about the global talent challenge, regulatory agility and green aviation.
  • Visit by Korea SMEs and Startups Agency - AAIS was pleased to welcome the Chief Audit Executive Mr Park Jeong yeol of KOSME to Seletar Aerospace Park on 7 Sep 2023. It was an opportunity to discuss the recovery of the aviation and aerospace sectors, and the development of Seletar Aerospace Park. We also spoke of possibilities for cooperation with Korean SMEs and startups. We welcome such international cooperation.
2021
  • First UAS Community Networking Session - The first UAS Community-only networking event was held on 15 October 2021. Mr Nicolas Ang of F-Drones hosted conversations with Mr Mike Monnik of DroneSec and Mr Vincent Lim of Viscoy, where we learnt more about their stories and businesses. This was followed by break-out sessions for networking in smaller groups. Having reached critical mass, the community will start alternating between its own networking events and joining AAIS members for HOST networking.
  • ICCAIA 2nd Asia Briefing: UTM and Integrated Airspace Management - Bob Lee, Chair of ICCAIA's CNS/ATM Committee, explained efforts to safely and effectively integrate unmanned aircraft into the overall airspace management concept. This entailed the capability to integrate unmanned operations with existing airspace users and air traffic control. ICCAIA also announced that an Advisory Group had been formed to propose a path ahead for an industry transition to integrated ATM and digital airspace management.

  • Drone Industry and Market Trends - Hendrik Boedecker of Drone Industry Insights presented an overview of the global drone market followed by perspectives from 2 drone services companies operating from Hamburg and Singapore. Matthias Gronstedt of HHLA Sky and Zhang Weiliang of Avetics Global reviewed and shared their perspectives on industry developments. This webinar was jointly presented with Rotorcraft Asia & Unmanned Systems Asia on 28 July 2021.
  • AI and Ethics in Aviation - As regulators such as the European Aviation Safety Agency explore introducing AI in aviation, Michael Daniel of Aviation Insight and Dr Bicky Bhangu of Rolls-Royce give their take on how the industry should develop and adopt an AI ethical framework - from a regulatory and safety perspective, with the view of achieving the desired outcomes of deploying AI. This event was co-organised by AAIS and SGInnovate on 26 July 2021.

  • Security of Aerial Cyber-Physical Systems - Drones are increasingly playing a positive role in society. However, as "flying computers" that collect, store and transmit data over wireless communications, they are potentially vulnerable to hacking. Drones have also been used for nefarious purposes and vital installations are grappling with the problem of drone detection and countermeasures. Dr Heather Monthie and Harshit Agrawal discuss solutions with Mike Monnik of DroneSec.

  • Advanced Air Mobility – Supply Chain - The third segment of our series on Advanced Air Mobility was held on 19 May 2021, featuring panel speakers, Mr Ian Lam, GM of Schaeffler Aerospace and Ms Evelyn Khoo, Business Development Manager for Composite Materials at Solvay. Both speakers discussed how their companies drew on experience in the aerospace and automotive markets to position themselves as AAM suppliers.

  • Mandatory Unmanned Aircraft Registration from 2 Jan 2020 - The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) will implement mandatory registration for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) from 2 January 2020. Any UA, such as a drone, with a total weight above 250 grams must be registered with the CAAS before it can be operated in Singapore. Read more
