About the Course:
Additive manufacturing, commonly coined as ‘3D printing’, is an increasingly popular technology for the new age Digital Manufacturing involving the generation of parts and features from computer-aided drawings (CAD) in a typical layer by layer manner using various forms of materials from metals to polymers. A direct deposition is one of the many forms of additive manufacturing and in this course, the focus is on the laser blown powder technique for the manufacturing and/or remanufacturing of metal-based components – where a laser is used to melt metal powders delivered by a flowing gas to form first a melt pool which solidifies to create layers of deposition on a workpiece. It is synonymous with laser welding with a powder feedstock. This free-form fabrication method can be employed for a wide range of generative and regenerative applications such as feature addition and/or repair of components, coatings for functional purposes, on top of new component manufacturing, and across various industries – aerospace, automotive, marine and offshore, energy and infrastructure, heavy machinery, etc.
Who Should Attend?
This course is targeted at organisations and/or individuals looking to have the first understanding or to develop the capability of the direct deposition method for manufacturing and/or remanufacturing applications. It is also suitable for those who are currently employed or who wish to be employed in manufacturing-related fields with the typical candidate profiles being but not limited to the following:

  • Process technician / engineer
  • Production supervisor / manager
  • Quality control manager / engineer

PRE-REQUISITES

  • Applicants should possess a degree in any discipline or a diploma with a minimum of 3 years of related working experience.
  • Applicants who do not have the required academic qualifications are still welcome to apply, but shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview for special approval.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Course Content:
Participants will be able to:

• Learn the fundamentals of direct deposition and the laser blown powder (LBP) process – underlying concepts, key process inputs and outputs, system technology, and possible applications
• Gain practical skills in the required programming, as well as pre-and post-process activities to generate simple build geometries
• Acquire the know-how to draw input-output relations and in perform first-pass quality assessments for an actual deposition process
• Learn key process risks/hazards and best practises pertaining to system and operational health, safety and environment (HSE), as well as gain knowledge on the necessary licences and approvals to run an LBP process

Upon Completion
Participants will be awarded with a Certificate of Attendance (COA) by ARTC if they meet the following criteria:
– Achieve at least 75% course attendance;
– Take all assessments; and
– Pass the course.

About the Trainers:
Dr Alin Patran
is a Senior Scientist with A*STAR Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC). He graduated from the University of Bucharest, Romania, with a degree in optical technologies and lasers, and received his PhD for his work in hot plasmas and their applications as radiation and particle emission sources. After a few years of research and teaching at the National University of Singapore (NUS), he shifted to conduct industrial research in arc plasma and its applications in high-intensity light sources, followed by several years dedicated to industrial engineering. Dr Alin joined ARTC in 2017 to lead the Reconstructive Technologies team, and since 2019, was appointed as the Group Manager for the Advanced Remanufacturing Group.Dr Davide Verdi is a Scientist and Technical Lead in Directed Laser Deposition with A*STAR ARTC. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering and his Master’s Degree in Materials Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy. Successively, Dr Davide obtained his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the King Juan Carlos University of Madrid, Spain, for his dissertation on the effect of temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of laser cladded nickel-based metal matrix composite coatings. Consequently, he spent one year as a post-doctorate research engineer at the ENSTA Bretagne, France, studying the dynamic behaviour of components obtained by laser powder bed fusion under laser-driven shock waves. In 2017, he joined the Regenerative Repair Process team in ARTC, contributing to the development of the directed metal deposition process for remanufacturing applications towards sustainability and digitalisation for Industry 4.0.

Ms Grace Tay is a Senior Development Engineer at A*STAR ARTC. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore before joining ARTC in 2014, where she has since worked on additive manufacturing technologies with a focus on laser powder blown direct deposition. Currently the Team Lead in this area, she is helping to drive developments for the technology towards the next generation of manufacturing towards sustainability and digitalisation, as well as developing manufacturing and remanufacturing applications solutions for various industry needs.
