AAIS was pleased to host a delegation from the Korean Aerospace Industries Association (KAIA) at Seletar Aerospace Park on 23 September 2024. Led by KAIA Vice President, Mr Lee Sangsub, the delegation also included Mr Ahn Hyunsu, CEO of ANH Structure. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to exchange insights on the latest developments in the aerospace sectors of both South Korea and Singapore.
South Korea’s aerospace industry has been growing steadily in recent years, with growth averaging 12% annually over the last five years. In 2022, the industry’s output reached approximately US$7.7 billion, with space projects accounting for a notable 35% of this total. The establishment of the Korean Aerospace Administration (KASA) earlier this year is expected to drive further expansion in Korea’s space sector.
Aircraft manufacturing and MRO continue to be important segments with parts manufacturing accounting for 14%, engine parts contributing 10%, and MRO activities representing 4% of total aerospace output. Indigenous aircraft programmes including the KF-21 “Boramae” fighter jet and the KUH-1 “Surion” utility helicopter account for 9% and 11% of the industry’s output, respectively. Additionally, South Korea is focusing on expanding its MRO sector through the development of dedicated industrial parks in Sacheon and Jinju. Like other developed economies, the sector faces challenges, including sustaining a strong talent pipeline and attracting skilled professionals to meet growing demands in aerospace engineering and MRO roles.
AAIS Chief Executive, in turn, shared key updates on Singapore’s aviation and aerospace landscape, highlighting the Singapore Pavilion exhibitors ahead of MRO Asia-Pacific 2024. The exchange of information between AAIS and KAIA laid the groundwork for potential collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
