On 15 October 2024, AAIS welcomed international guests from the Aviation Foundation Programme, organised by the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA), to Seletar Aerospace Park. The visit was part of a field trip segment organised in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and SAA. The delegation comprised officials and representatives from various small nation states, providing a platform for valuable cross-border exchanges and engagement.
During the visit, AAIS Chief Executive delivered a seminar that focused on the role of aerospace associations in supporting and representing industry interests. This included an overview of how associations serve as the voice of the aerospace industry, advocating on behalf of their members at both national and international levels. Emphasis was also placed on the importance of associations in fostering collaboration and facilitating networking opportunities, thereby adding substantial value to their members.
The seminar delved into international and regional alliances, such as the Global Aerospace Cluster Partnership, which connects over 60 aerospace associations and their members. There were also robust discussions on the pivotal role that associations play in supporting organisations like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and national aviation authorities. Through the auspices of entities such as the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations (ICCAIA), national and regional associations contribute to the development of industry standards and harmonisation of regulatory practices.
CE also shared insights into AAIS’s role as the voice of the aerospace industry in Singapore. He elaborated on how the association facilitates business opportunities, fosters a sense of community among members, and represents their collective views in policy discussions.
A Q&A session followed the presentation, where participants raised questions about best practices for consulting with members and influencing policy decisions in the aerospace sector. There was also interest about the financial sustainability of aerospace associations. CE shared that while government funding is an option, AAIS primarily relies on membership fees to fund its activities.
The visit proved to be a successful engagement, providing participants, including future leaders and policymakers, with valuable insights into the work of aerospace associations and their contributions to the industry.
