eVTOLS: A Revolution in Aerial Mobility?

Electric-powered vertical lift was once again in focus on 5 Sep 2023, via a webinar organised by S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) and supported by AAIS. The webinar was moderated by RSIS, with panelists from Vertical Aerospace, Archer Aviation, Skyports Infrastructure and NTU. The panel concluded that Singapore could be a lead adopter of eVTOL flight, attracting industry and R&D activities.

OJT Design and Coaching for HR and Operations Managers

AAIS collaborated with Ngee Ann Polytechnic to present a webinar on “OJT Design and Coaching for HR and Operations Managers”. Held on 6 July, the webinar illuminated strategies and tools for effective on-the-job training (OJT) and coaching as well as effective coaching methods. Discussions also touched on subsidies, supports, and funding available for structured OJT and coaching initiatives, with potentially up to 90% support.

3rd ASEAN Sustainability Forum

The 3rd ASEAN Sustainability Forum was held on 17 May 2023 on the sidelines of the ASEAN Air Transport Working Group’s meeting in Singapore. ASEAN aviation regulators and industry participants heard from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Federal Aviation Administration, European Union Aviation Safety Agency, Airbus, Singapore Airlines, and Malaysia Aviation Group.

ICCAIA Asia Briefing Summer Edition 2022 – Sustainability

AAIS was pleased to organise the ICCAIA (International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries) Asia Briefing Summer Edition 2022, together with the Society of Japan Aerospace Companies (SJAC) and Malaysia Aerospace Industry Association (MAIA). Held on 25 August 2022, the webinar focused on sustainability with speakers providing views on policies, technical solutions and issues of industry concern.

How COVID and Conflict in Ukraine has affected Aircraft Leasing

This webinar held on 23 June 2022, featured Mr Rob Morris of Ascend by Cirium, and Mr Rajaram Ramiah, of RHTLaw Asia LLP. Participants took away insights on the impact of sanctions on Russian leased fleets, the significance of the conflict with respect to global air travel recovery, and uncertainties arising from a resurgence of COVID and other macroeconomic risks.

International Air Travel Recovery in Singapore and the Region

This hybrid event was held on 21 April 2022, featuring industry analyst and consultant, Brendan Sobie of Sobie Aviation. Sharing in-depth analyses of passenger traffic, airline and airport operations data from Singapore and around the region, Brendan discussed air travel recovery projections and anticipated industry/market trends.

MRO Market Outlook, Trends and Implications

This event, which took place at the new AAIS hybrid training premises on 1st April 2022 featured Mr David Stewart of Oliver Wyman. David provided an analysis of the outlook for MRO and the forces that are set to shape the industry in the next decade. He also shared insights specific to the Singapore aerospace MRO industry and took questions on topics ranging from the Chinese aerospace market, manpower, additive manufacturing, and others.

Aircraft Leasing Tax Forum – Budget 2022

Held on 31 March at AAIS, this hybrid event discussed the latest tax developments that will impact the Aircraft Leasing industry. The session kicked off with updates from Mr Low Zhi Hong of EDB on the Aircraft Leasing Scheme and an analysis of the Singapore tax environment by Ms Tan Bin Eng of Ernst & Young. A panel discussion ensued with Ms Tan and Mr Lim Tse Yong of EDB, moderated by AAIS MC member Mr Kevin Chow (Thales).

#Breakthebias: Aviation and Aerospace Careers in Singapore

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, AAIS, Women in Aviation International Singapore Chapter, and NTU Aerospace Society organised a hybrid event on 16 Mar 2022 at NTU. We were pleased to have Susan Goh of SIA Engineering, Leong Wai Kuan of UPS and Michelle Woon of Dnata share reflections on their career progression and experiences, moderated by AAIS MC member,Oliver Chamberlain of Rolls-Royce.

Aerospace Leaders’ Dialogue Singapore 2022

The inaugural Aerospace Leaders’ Dialogue Singapore 2022 organised by AAIS was held on 17 February. A hybrid event on the sidelines of Singapore Airshow, the focus was on the theme of ‘Sustainability, Innovation and Technology for the Future of Aerospace’. We were privileged to hear insights from industry leaders on priorities on the road to recovery, sustainability strategies, renewable energies, advanced technologies, and more.

Singapore Aerospace Technology Leadership Forum (SATFL) 2022

Held on 14 February, SATFL 2022 kicked off a series of thought-provoking conferences and industry engagement events that took place during the week of the Singapore Airshow. Co-organised by A*STAR and AAIS, SATFL 2022 was conducted virtually with the theme, ‘Relaunching Aviation’. Two panel discussions were held – on ‘Positioning for Recovery’ and ‘Strengthening Future Readiness’.

Aviation Sustainability from an Airline Perspective

Held on 25 January 2022, this webinar featured Mr Chen Fook Ping, Vice-President of Sustainability at Singapore Airlines who spoke on Climate Action, Responsible Consumption and having a Positive Impact on Society. To round off the session, Mr Chen observed that sustainability required an “all hands on deck” approach involving all partners.

Singapore Stopover: Meet Zara Rutherford

It was a very special Christmas eve in Singapore as we received 19-year-old aviator Zara Rutherford at Seletar airport. With her arrival in Singapore on 24 December 2021 onboard her Czech-Slovak Shark aircraft, the Belgian pilot was well on course to breaking a world record as the youngest woman ever to circumnavigate the globe, and the youngest person ever to fly around the world in an ultralight.

Innovation in Air Transport

The ‘Innovation in Air Transport’ webinar held on 11 Nov 2021 was co-organised with Starburst Aerospace. Following an introduction to the Singapore Aviation Accelerator (SAA), Mr Paul Brady of start-up CarbonClick presented its carbon offset solution for airlines, airports and e-commerce platforms. A panel discussion ensued, featuring Mr Karthikeyan of SIA Engineering Company and Mr Alex Kasinec of Evitado Technologies from the first cohort of SAA.

Flying giants: The Antonov-124

AAIS organised an exclusive first-hand insight into the iconic Antonov-124, an aircraft that was for 30 years the world’s heaviest cargo plane by gross weight. This webinar on 9 September 2021 was held in cooperation with Volga-Dnepr group and our member, Air Freight Logistics Singapore. Experts Vladimir Vyshemirskiy and Evgeniy Maksharov spoke on the An-124 specifications and shared interesting examples of the many oversized and unusual cargo carried by the aircraft.

Launch of Solar Adoption Report

The inaugural Singapore Aerospace Industry Solar Adoption Report (SAISAR 2021) was launched on 2 Sep 2021. It consolidates the progress made by the aerospace industry in its adoption of solar energy as part of Singapore’s national effort. The report was presented by Mr Chan Mun Wei, with Dr Bicky Bhangu of Rolls-Royce also speaking about the company’s sustainability programmes and Mr Koh Tee Yan sharing about JTC’s solar initiatives in support of industry.

IATA Financial Resilience and Industry Standards

In a 5 Aug webinar session moderated by Desmond Goh of Eaton Aerospace, Ms Winnifred Yeo (“Winni”) of IATA Asia Pacific spoke about IATA’s role in advocacy and standardisation. She explained how IATA’s e-invoicing service and IATA Clearing House (ICH) facilitate payments between airlines, suppliers and governments. She also showed how MROs and suppliers have implemented this for financial resilience and efficiency.
