AAIS-CAAS Seminar: Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement with the FAA Jointly organised by the AAIS and CAAS, the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement(BASA) seminar was held on September 3, 2010 at the Singapore Aviation Academy. The day's programme included industry updates and sharing sessions by CAAS on the Singapore-USA BASA and its scope, as well as the journey towards achieving SAR21. Mr Patrick Power, FAA Senior Representative, was also present to share on the US Perspective on BASA.
AAIS Applied Research & Development Symposium
The AAIS held its first Applied Research & Development Symposium on September 7, 2010, at Temasek Polytechnic. The Symposium aims to be a platform for the industry to stay up to date with current research and development capabilities of some of the top local institutions in Singapore, and explore potential opportunities to work together to increase workplace efficiency and productivity.
The event also included a presentation by Dr John Watret of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, who flew in especially for the event, on the Next Gen and Aviation Research Issues and Challenges. The Symposium also encouraged interaction with companies looking to embark on innovation and capabilities development projects.

Training & Development Seminar (2nd Edition) - 29 July 2010
With the success of the AAIS' AeroProfessional Series: Human Capital on 30 June 2010, which brought to the forefront a focus on Human Capital and the crucial role present HR practitioners and training coordinators play in the planning and development of this essential organisation asset, the AAIS organised the 2nd edition of the Training & Development Seminar.
The seminar focused on HR practitioners in the aerospace industry, bringing together speakers from WDA, STADA, HR Extension and ACP Computer Training to educate participants on training trends and to impart strategies and practices, through essential skills that would enhance on overall organisation excellence.

AAIS-SBF Seminar on Business Continuity Management
The recent flooding in Orchard Road severely affected many businesses, and highlighted the importance for companies to have a Business Continuity Management (BCM) system in place. To give members further insight to the benefits of being prepared, the AAIS and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) jointly organised a BCM Seminar on 8 July 2010.
Guest Speaker, Henry Ee from BCP Asia explained how BCM can help reduce, mitigate and ensure minimal disruption to businesses due to unforeseen circumstances. Linking BCM to aviation industry, 2nd guest speaker Tay Seow Hong from Singapore Airlines shared his company’s experience in setting up and implementing BCM. Lastly, SBF presented on the funding available to companies keen on implementing BCM.
Launch of AAIS AeroProfessional Series - 30 June 2010
The AAIS launched the AeroProfessional Series at the AAIS-Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) Conference on 30 June 2010. The Conference included an industry dialogue with the Minister for Manpower, Mr Gan Kim Yong, and was the first time the industry has engaged a Minister in such a manner.
With the first session of the Series focusing on Human Capital, the event saw active participation from about 100 leaders from the aerospace community.
The event also saw the appointment of the AAIS Aerospace Human Capital Steering Committee (AHCSC) members. A steering committee of the AAIS, this is an industry-driven body comprising representatives from key industry sub-sectors, with the participation of the Ministry of Manpower, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Singapore Economic Development Board, SPRING Singapore and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency.
This year's Annual AAIS Bowling Tournament was held at Orchid Bowl @ Tampines SAFRA. The tournament attracted a total of 48 teams from 23 organisations, which included an invitation team from CAAS.
As much as it is a competition between the teams, the AAIS’ main intention is to encourage a leisure opportunity with fellow colleagues (not only within their own companies but also with the aerospace industry as a whole) and not forgetting with their family members. AAIS provided movie screening, balloon making and face painting sessions to keep the kids entertained.
This year saw HSUNPAC 1 grappled the overall Team Championship with a total score of 2266. SIAEC 1 came in a close second at 2258 while ST AERO 1 claimed the 2nd-runner up position at 2119.
For the best individual scores, Ms Ramona (HSUNPAC 1) took the Best Individual Female with a total score of 541. Mr Alfred Lim (SIAEC 1) achieved a total score of 711, taking both the Best Individual Male as while as the Highest Game Score Prize at 263.

Nadcap Aerospace Series 2010 and PRI 20th Annual Meeting in Singapore - 21 to 25 June 2010 The AAIS, together with SPRING Singapore and the Performance Review Institute (PRI) organised the recent Nadcap Aerospace Series 2010 to help the local aerospace companies to understand and meet aerospace-related certification requirements.
Since its inception in 1990, it is the first time that the PRI is conducting its Annual Meeting in Singapore. Singapore was chosen as there was a significant growth of Nadcap accreditated organisations in the Asia Pacific region, as well as it being an MRO Hub. A series of meetings and discussions between prime contractors and aerospace suppliers were held throughout the few days.
The Nadcap Aerospace Series 2010 covered the requirements of the Nadcap Welding programme, Audit and AS9100, as well as the process for Contract Review. A total of 45 participants from various aerospace companies (including international participants) attended the 5 days workshops that was held at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore.
AAIS Aerospace Seminar in partnership with the UKTI
On 3 June 2010, the AAIS conducted a joint Aerospace Seminar with the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI). The event was kindly graced by guest speaker, Mr John Horsburgh, Chief Operating Officer for Rolls-Royce Singapore who talked about the UK Aerospace Sector from his company's perspective. Other presenters also provided an overview of the Farnborough International Airshow and spoke about general investment opportunities in the UK Aerospace Sector.
AAIS Industry Information Sharing Session
As part of the AAIS AeroResource Centre’s ongoing industry outreach effort, the Enterprise Excellence Division held the AAIS Industry Sharing Session on 27 May 2010 at Café Jamaica in Circular Road. The session was attended by participants from various sectors of the industry, who were given an insight to the current legislative and industry requirements in the areas of safety and quality.
Participants also had the opportunity to enjoy premium Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee at the casual networking session with our presenters and industry partners. The session ended with a presentation by the AAIS on the formation of the AAIS AeroConsult Group – the newly-formed consultancy arm of the Association, as well as upcoming initiatives by the AAIS.
The AAIS would like to thank our event partners, Intertek, Bond International, as well as all who were present at the event. The Association will continue to engage the industry via periodic industry and information sharing sessions.
AAIS Open House
AAIS Members were invited to the new AAIS office in Paya Lebar on 26 May 2010 to network and to find out more about the latest AAIS programmes and initiatives. Attendees were also given an overview of the Association, which was recently restructured to better cater to the needs of Members.
AAIS-AmCham Networking Evening
13 May 2010 saw industry leaders and business development managers from AAIS Member companies and the American Chamber of Commerce's Aerospace and Defence Committee meeting for a long-awaited networking evening. It was an event worth waiting for, with over 50 aerospace professionals coming together at Brewerkz at Riverside Point to network, relax and reconnect.
Mr Raymond Corrigan, co-chair of the Amcham Aerospace and Defence Committee gave all guests a warm welcome together with Dr Aloysius Tay, CE of the AAIS. The event saw participants from Raytheon International, MMI Holdings, Mercer Consulting, National Air Cargo, Altair, Werner Aero Services, Rockwell Collins, Hitech Heat Treatment Services, Melchers Aviation, Praxair Surface Technologies and many more. The event lasted well into the evening with light conversation over good food and drinks.
To assist aerospace companies to ramp up productivity with the help of technology, the AAIS, with the support of IBM and SIMTech, organised a hald-day seminar on 7 April 2010 to provide participants with a better idea of software and hardware solutions available to achieve more output with less resources. The AAIS also presented the TIA Funding Programme that can assist companies defray costs.
Close to 40 participants gathered at the Crowne Plaza to hear the latest from some of our TIA endorsed providers, including IBM, SIMTech, Optimax and Blum Production/Lifton Magnet.

AAIS-EDB Engagement with HR Leaders
Through the AAIS' interactions with the industry and the government, certain issues require platforms for further discussion. On 6 April 2010, the AAIS, together with EDB, organised a closed-door session with HR leaders in the industry to discuss current manpower issues including the impact of the cuts in the Aerospace Labour Supplying Scheme on the industry. Four HR leaders representing over 60% of the industry workforce attended this session and candidly shared their views on various HR issues.
The AAIS also shared broadly about the upcoming Aerospace Human Capital Steering Committee, under which a number of sub-committees would be set up to engage CEOs/MDs in the industry as well as HR leaders on human capital issues in the long and short term.
AeroCareer Pavilion @ Career & Training 2010: Education 2010
As the economy begins to pick up, the aerospace industry is eager to recruit and to train, as part of the Government's initiative to promote productivity. The AAIS participated with an industry pavilion at the Career & Training 2010: Education 2010. The 4-day event was held at Suntec Convention Centre from 4 to 7 March 2010.
An Aerospace Vacancy Section was specially created within the AeroCareer Pavilion this year to offer more than 180 aerospace positions to both job seekers and school leavers. This is part of the AAIS' initiative to attract talent to the niche Aerospace Industry.

Singapore Airshow 2010 - Singapore Pavilion The AAIS launched the Singapore Pavilion at the Singapore Airshow 2010 on 2 February 2010. This year, the number of participating companies at the Singapore Pavilion has increased, with a total of 29 companies being showcased this year -- up from 17 from the previous Singapore Airshow in 2008. The Singapore Pavilion was officially opened by Guest-of-Honour Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence.
The AAIS would like to thank IE Singapore, SPRING Singapore, CAAS as well as all participating companies for their support to the Pavilion. Aerospace Industry Induction Programme (AIIP) 2010 Held in conjunction with the Singapore Airshow, the Aerospace Industry Induction Programme (AIIP) 2010 is a bi-annual event organised by the AAIS and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) to introduce students to the Aerospace Industry. The Programme aims to highlight the interesting and rewarding aerospace education and career opportunities available in Singapore.
A total of about 600 students from 13 institutions participated in the AIIP this year. The day's programme included talks and presentations by Goodrich Aerospace, Hawker Pacific, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, ST Aerospace, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, EDB, CAAS and the RSAF.
